Definition
CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) is an international convention regulating trade in wild fauna and flora species threatened with extinction. Implemented in the EU by Regulation 338/97. It has three appendices (I-III) with different protection levels. Import and export of CITES species requires permits issued by competent authorities.
