Tariff Ceiling

General

PL: Plafon taryfowy | DE: Zollplafond

Definition

A tariff ceiling is a tariff mechanism similar to a quota but with more flexible operation. It sets an upper limit for imports at a reduced rate, after which the Commission MAY (but need not) reinstate the normal rate. Unlike a quota (where reinstatement is automatic), a ceiling gives the Commission discretionary power.
