Definition
A health certificate is an official document issued by the competent authority of the exporting country confirming that food, animal or animal-origin products meet the sanitary and health requirements of the importing country. The certificate is required for EU imports of food, feed, live animals and animal-origin products from third countries.
In the EU, imports of animal-origin products are controlled at Border Control Posts (BCPs) through the TRACES system. The health certificate must be issued by an official veterinarian and correspond to the EU-prescribed model.
